Safety built into Yuri

Know where each of these is, and what it does, before you power Yuri on.

Desktop & Mobile

Hardware emergency stop

A physical e-stop button. On Yuri Desktop it halts the arms; on Yuri Mobile it halts the arms and the base.

Mobile

Wireless remote e-stop

A handheld e-stop so the person nearest the robot can stop it, not only the person at the controls.

Software

Emergency Stop in Telepath

A big Emergency Stop is always one tap away and always cuts motor power.

Software

Shadow mode and safety checklist

New skills run in shadow mode first — the robot thinks, but doesn’t move — until you switch motion on deliberately. A safety checklist runs before the robot performs a task on its own.

Desktop & Mobile

Depth camera for safety

A head-mounted RealSense depth camera means Yuri can detect people who are too close to the robot.

Mobile

Keep-out-zone siren

An audible siren sounds when someone enters Yuri Mobile’s keep-out zone.

Desktop & Mobile

Indicator light

A blinking light shows Yuri is in operation. If it is blinking, treat the robot as live.

Desktop & Mobile

Mechanical end stops

Every arm joint has mechanical end stops that limit its range of travel.

Before you power on

  • Trained operators only. Anyone who powers, drives or teaches Yuri should have been shown how to stop it.
  • Find and test the e-stop. Press it and confirm the robot will not move, then release it. On Yuri Mobile, test the wireless remote e-stop too.
  • Clear the workspace. Remove anything the arms could strike or knock over, and anything fragile or sharp within reach.
  • Mark out the area. Keep bystanders outside the full reach of both arms — and for Yuri Mobile, outside the path it will drive.
  • Use it indoors, on a flat floor, in a dry room between 10 and 35 °C.
  • Check cables and power. Cables routed clear of the arms and wheels, no damaged leads, power supplies on a stable surface. On Yuri Mobile, check that every battery pack is fully seated.
  • Dress for it. Tie back long hair; remove loose sleeves, scarves, lanyards and dangling jewelry.

While Yuri is powered

  • Assume it can move at any time. A powered robot can start moving without warning — from a teleoperator, a running policy, or a software update.
  • One person in charge. Agree who is operating, and keep the e-stop within that person’s reach.
  • Stay out of the gripper jaws and joints. The grippers and the gaps between arm links close with enough force to pinch fingers.
  • Teleoperating with a Quest headset? The operator cannot see the room. Have a second person watch the robot with an e-stop in hand.
  • Lose the video or feel lag? Press E-STOP first, then find out why.
  • Running a new skill? Watch it in shadow mode before you switch motion on, and keep a hand on the e-stop for the first live runs.
  • Stop if anything is unexpected — a strange noise, a jerky joint, a warm smell, a gripper that will not let go.

What to avoid

  • Reaching between the arms, or between an arm and the body, while Yuri is powered.
  • Touching, adjusting or servicing the robot without pressing E-STOP first.
  • Leaning on, sitting on, riding or climbing on Yuri or MobileBase™.
  • Lifting more than the arms are rated for — 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg) per arm on Yuri Desktop, 11 lbs (5.0 kg) per arm on Yuri Mobile, held with the arms extended.
  • Handling sharp, hot, liquid or hazardous items, or anything that would be dangerous if dropped.
  • Leaving a powered robot unattended, or letting untrained people operate it.
  • Moving Yuri Desktop on its casters while it is powered.
  • Driving Yuri Mobile near stairs, drop-offs, loading-dock edges, wet floors or slopes steeper than about 5°.
  • Using Yuri outdoors, in rain or condensing humidity, or in explosive or dusty atmospheres.
  • Modifying the e-stop circuit, disabling safety features, or removing the warning label.

Power and batteries

Yuri Desktop

Wall power

Yuri Desktop runs from wall supplies. Use only the supplies shipped with the robot, keep them dry and ventilated, and unplug them before servicing.

Yuri Mobile

Li-ion battery packs

Hot-swap one pack at a time, only with the supplied packs and charger. Never charge, use or ship a pack that is swollen, dented, wet or hot. Charge on a non-flammable surface, away from anything that could burn.

Touching, adjusting or servicing

  • Press E-STOP first. Every time — even for a quick adjustment.
  • Support the arms before cutting power. Yuri’s arms are backdrivable: when motor power is cut they are no longer held up and can drop under their own weight. Keep hands and feet out from under them.
  • Fully isolate power for anything more than an adjustment: unplug the wall supplies on Yuri Desktop; switch off and remove the battery packs on Yuri Mobile.
  • Release the e-stop last, only when everyone is clear and tools are out of the workspace.
